PREVIEW: Open de Espana - Monday, April 23, 2007
MADRID, Spain -- For the third consecutive European Tour event, Notah Begay III is America's only representative in the 120-person, multi-national field.
"As the lone American in many of the tournaments this year, I try to represent myself in a respectable fashion," Notah said. "I love my country and feel that it has so many good things to offer. I'm also eager to learn of other countries. My wife (Apryl) and I learn something new every week and the coming weeks shouldn't be any different."
After a few weeks off, Notah will take on the field at this week's Open de España, held for the first time at the Centro Nacional de Golf, located in the outskirts of Madrid.
"So far, my golf experience in Spain has been limited to the Costa del Sol," Notah said of his European Tour Q-school experience last November. "This week's event will be my first trip to Madrid and I can't wait to see the city. I've read so many interesting things about its history and look forward to meeting some of the golf fans."
With easy access to the course by train or bus, the Madrileños are predicted to come out in droves to watch this week's event. They might pass Notah on his way out of the venue en route to watch some of the high-quality local soccer in the Madrid area.
"I will definitely watch some football on the tele," Notah said, "but if I get the chance to see Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid play this week I would love it. The passion and the beauty of the Spanish league gives me many new ideas on what I can teach the kids of the San Felipe soccer program."
