PREVIEW: ATT Pebble Beach National Pro-Am - Thursday, February 09, 2006
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Don't be surprised if you see Notah Begay III trading golf tips for computer support during this week's ATT Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The celebrity-laden event will get underway on Thursday in Pebble Beach and Notah is paired with one of the computer industry's most impressive CEOs.
"I'm not paired with a Hollywood celebrity this year but instead get to play with an impressive businessman from Silicon Valley, Scott McNealy," Notah said of his playing partner. "He is the CEO of Sun Microsystems."
McNealy graduated from Harvard with a BA in Economics and followed that with an MBA from Stanford. Those two formative years at Stanford soon spawned a little startup known as SUN, originally an acronym for the Stanford University Network.
"I'm sure to get some great computer advice and might even figure out how keep my computer from going on the 'blitz,'" said Notah, also a graduate of Stanford.
Among the celebrities playing in this year's event are: Tom Brady (quarterback of the New England Patriots), Ozzie Smith (former St. Louis Cardinals' shortstop), Donald Trump and actors Samuel L. Jackson and Bill Murray.
According to Notah, "It's not too much more difficult to focus this week but you can't be too sensitive. If a pack of screaming girls start running toward you, don't get mad when they run right past you and ask Kevin Costner for his autograph. All in all it's a very fun week at one of the most beautiful venues in the world."
The event is played on three courses in Pebble Beach - Poppy Hills Golf Course, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links.
"I finished 4th at this event in 2000 with a very good chance to win," Notah said. "Unfortunately, Tiger (Woods) shot a low round on Sunday and beat me by two shots."
Tiger rallied from seven shots behind over the final seven holes to win in 2000.
