PREVIEW: Knoxville Open - Tuesday, June 13, 2006
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Already a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, Notah Begay III appears to be dialing-in another victory sometime soon. The Stanford graduate upped his streak to eight consecutive cuts made on the Nationwide Tour at last weekend's LaSalle Bank Open and has moved on to the next phase of his game - getting into contention to win.
"Although I managed to make another cut I still have yet to play consistently well on the weekends," Notah said on Monday. "My weekend play will be the focus of the next few weeks as I try to get into tournament contention soon."
After posting a 1-under 70 in last Thursday's 1st Round, Notah fought the elements and a difficult course to finish with a 77, 70 and an 80 in the final three rounds, respectively. The course was playing so tough during the 2nd Round that the cut line moved down to plus-6.
"In my 10-plus years as a professional golfer, I've never seen the cut line move six shots in one day," Notah said. "The conditions on Friday were extremely difficult with high winds and thick rough causing major problems for me."
This week, Notah will take to the course at the Fox Den Country Club attempting to win the Knoxville Open for his first Nationwide Tour victory.
Also in the field are seven-time PGA Tour winner Bill Glasson, three-time PGA Tour winner Mike Hulbert and two-time PGA Tour winners Gabriel Hjertstedt, Alex Cejka and Grant Waite.
