NB3 Foundation Welcomes New Diabetes Prevention and Sports Staff
New Director of NB3 Sports and Health Programs
The NB3 Foundation is pleased to announce a new addition to its team. Kelli Wilson, MS, RD (Kickapoo/Seminole/Creek) joined the NB3 Foundation’s team in December 2010 as the Director of Sports and Health Programs. Kelli brings a wealth of experience and success working with Native American communities on the efforts of childhood obesity and the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. As a Registered Dietitian and the Director of Sports and Health Programs, Kelli will be spearheading much-needed efforts in regards to community development, healthy living and the importance of healthy eating and good nutrition throughout Indian Country. Kelli will directly oversee the NB3 Soccer, Golf and San Felipe Place-Based Programs and will work to integrate innovative and evidence-based practices regarding childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes prevention.
Prior to joining the NB3 Foundation, Kelli served as a Lieutenant in the United States Public Health Service, Indian Health Service in Wewoka, OK. She also worked as a Pediatric Dietitian for the Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa. Kelli has been a pioneer for diabetes prevention efforts and has actively served on academic and health-related boards and organizations.
Kelli has a Master of Science in Nutrition from the University of Central Oklahoma and earned her undergraduate degree in Nutrition from the University of New Mexico.
New Director of NB3 Soccer
The NB3 Foundation is also pleased to announce another new addition to our team. Former Smith College soccer coach Stephanie Gabbert is the new Director of the NB3 Soccer Program. Prior to her successful term with Smith College, Stephanie had a highly successful coaching career with Ohio State University, Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin. During her time at the University of Iowa, she was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and Division I National Coach of the Year. Stephanie also served as a U.S. Soccer National Team Coach and has a US Soccer ‘A’ Coaching License.
Stephanie brings a strong passion to the NB3 Foundation for the sport of soccer and has demonstrated success in her profession throughout her career. Recently, Stephanie’s emphasis has been to move into the broader arena of youth leadership development through sport. This has been applied through her collegiate soccer career as well as internationally in her work with a leadership development academy in South Africa. The expanding and committed work of the NB3 Foundation to use soccer as a vehicle for change in the health and lives of Native American youth provides Stephanie with a perfect environment to put her skills and expertise to work.
“It’s a chance to use sports as a mechanism for social change,” said Stephanie, who will over see the expansion of the soccer program to several new reservations. “It’s awesome that Notah has created this foundation – it’s a program created from scratch, so, from a creative perspective, it’s going to be very challenging, with the possibility of being very rewarding, sustainable and impactful in many different ways.”
