Growing Up in New Mexico (1972-1990)I love the State of New Mexico and would not have chosen to grow up anywhere else. My parents made it possible for me to go to one of the top schools in the city, the Albuquerque Academy. When I was 5 years old, I hopped the fence at Ladera Golf Course and waited for the head pro to show up one morning. When he showed, I introduced myself and asked for a job. I didn't want him to pay me, I just wanted to be able to hit golf balls and play for free.....well, the rest is history. I groomed my game at Ladera Golf Course in Albuquerque and still play it today. |
Stanford University (1990-1995)
The Economics degree I received from Stanford is still the most important thing I will ever accomplish in my career. My experience at Stanford was simply incredible. It is quite humbling to be in class when your classmates are Olympic gold medalists, successful entrepreneurs, and some of the best minds in the country. I got to be very close with the Stanford American Indian Organization (SAIO) and stay close with the program to this day. As far as golf is concerned, I was a three-time-All-American and we won a team NCAA title in 1994 where I shot 62 in the second round. I think that score of ten under par still stands today!
Professional Golf
My career as a professional took off when I finished 10th on the 1998 Nationwide Tour Money List and earned my PGA TOUR card. In 1999 and 2000, I won four PGA TOURevents and had the chance to represent my country as a member of the 2000 President's Cup Team. In 2001, I suffered a tear in the L4/L5 disc in my lower back and had no idea it would take me seven years to be pain-free. In that timeframe, I dedicated myself to rehabilitating my back but it was a long and arduous process. As dark as those times were, some great things came out of them also. My wife and I had the chance to start a family and I was able to start a Foundation that serves Indian youth. I am pain-free and have so much more of an appreciation for what I have been able to accomplish throughout my career, both on and off the golf course.
