Foundation Programs

The mission of the Notah Begay III Foundation is to promote the health, wellness and leadership development of Native American youth. The Foundation seeks to accomplish this mission by helping Tribal Nations to build the capacity to design, manage and sustain effective wellness, sports and youth development programs for Native American youth.

STRATEGIC PROGRAM FOCUS

Sports: The Foundation supports the development of sustainable sports programming for Native American youth. Our goal is to help promote the development of quality sports programming designed to increase opportunities and access for physical activity and to competitive sports in schools and tribal communities.

Health & Wellness: The Foundation supports strategic initiatives and sustainable programming designed by Native Americans to address grave issues such as obesity and diabetes impacting Native American youth. The goal is to support advocacy, education and capacity-building within tribal programs that can make a profound and lasting difference in the health and wellbeing of Native American youth.

CURRENT PROGRAMS

Since its inception, the Notah Begay III Foundation has supported Native American youth programs in the form of golf and soccer.

Golf Program

The Notah Begay III Foundation has partnered with the Tohajiilee High School, a Navajo Nation community, to deliver sound golf curriculum to its participants. The Foundation's ongoing involvement with the program has been a source of pride and accomplishment for the Foundation, participating youth and the community.

As the only full-blooded Native American on the PGA Tour, Notah would like to involve as many Native youth as possible in the game of golf. The Foundation strives to provide Native youth with access and opportunities to golf to help them overcome socio-economic barriers that have traditionally prevented their participation in the sport. To this end, the Foundation provides clinics and junior golf programs. Our major goals include:

  • Provide a junior golf program that is designed in the image of Native America by Native Americans.
  • Provide an introduction to the fundamental skills and the rules of the game.
  • Demonstrate how life skills such as honesty, integrity, proper etiquette, and sportsmanship are important components to the game of golf.
  • Educate youth about the various academic and career opportunities associated with golf
  • Promote leadership development that can carry on to other sports, family, education and community.

Soccer Program

The Soccer Program has been a huge success in getting the kids of the San Felipe Pueblo active and competitive. A significant impact has already been achieved with participating youth in terms of increasing physical fitness and preventing obesity. The San Felipe Soccer Club has grown to include more than 150 Native American youth that participate on one of 16 different teams for a 10 game season in both the spring and the fall.
The Notah Begay III Foundation's partnership with the San Felipe Pueblo has paved the way for the creation of a model soccer program. As a result, the Foundation's goal is to design a culturally appropriate and sustainable community soccer and coaches' training program that will enable this exciting sport to be brought to many more Native communities nationwide in the future.
